The Basics II: A Big Long Hike

So where exactly are we going? Undoubtedly I'll have future hikers asking me this question. Of course the plan is in a state of flux and the current vision is quite preliminary. The major foreseeable constraints are time off from our respective jobs, travel time to and from the start and finish locations, and the overall stamina of the group.

As it stands we'll be travelling from Queenston, which is just bnorth of Niagara Falls, to Mono Centre, a lovely town west of Mississauga. The entire trip will be around 300km. I wish it were possible for us to do the whole trail but it doesn't look feasible. That said a lot can change in a year.

We'll trek through four of the nine Bruce Trail clubs:

The Basics I: Why Cancer?

I don't want to linger too much on this topic, but it was the first question asked of me so I'll give it a go.

Cancer. AIDS. Kidney disease. Heart Disease. Stroke. ALS. Alzheimer's. Parkinson's. MS. MD. Diabetes. Cystic fibrosis. Schizophrenia. Cerebral palsy. CJD. Lupus. Hospitals. Meals on wheels. Homelessness. Global poverty. Disaster relief. Food bank. Domestic violence. Street kids. Alcoholism. Drug abuse...It goes on. With so much to suffer from how can I choose just one cause to commit to?

The decision was pretty selfish. I simply know too many people that have endured the disease or had to support a loved one and I am tired of doing nothing. All of the causes listed above and many more are worthy causes to invest time and funds, but I'll leave that up to you. I'm one guy and can only do so much.

That's it. There was no formula; I've been affected by those around me and made a choice. Chances are there are many around you that were afflicted by cancer as well. There are incredible breakthroughs every week but the funding needs to continue for the fight to persist. It's about time we get it done.

The Big Hike

Hi there!

In roughly one year's time, I am going to hike a large portion of the Bruce Trail in order to raise money for cancer research. I hope to raise over $10,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society, which I trust will become a small contribution to finding a cure for the greatest scourge in human history. At the moment this endeavour is called "The Big Hike," but I'm sure I or my companions will think of something better along the way, because it's kind of lacking creativity.

This blog is supposed to detail the ups and (hopefully few) downs of trying to plan this event, from the fundraising, buying gear, all the way to the excursion itself. Along the way I'm going to ask for comments, especially from those experienced in backcountry trekking, because I've never done more than a three-nighter in Tremblant park.

Why a hike? Why such a long hike? Why cancer? Why now?

Well, keep reading.
